We left the campsite and headed up to Colville. It began to rain. At Colville we headed across the peninsular towards Waikawau on the eastern side. The tarmac road soon turned to a 'gravel road' which was rough going. We had to go over the mountains so the road was very bendy and went steeply up and then down through lush forests. New Zealand ferns were growing wild everywhere. At Waikawau we travelled back down beside the unsighted coast over more mountains to Kennedy Bay and then back across yet more mountains to Coromandel on the western side of the peninsular where the gravel road ended. Peter decided that after travelling for 30 miles on gravel roads he didn't want to travel on them ever again as they took so much concentration that he couldn't see much of the scenery. As there were fewer steep drops on the passenger side it was less nerve racking for Lorna.
