We were then driven to a new town. Many of these have been built on the outskirts of the city to house the poorer paid people. They consist of very high rise flats with schools, churches, community halls, markets and shops. The population of Singapore is about 70% Chinese, 10% Indian and 20% Malay (the indiginous people) and the allocation of flats in the new towns is done on that basis. We had a short stop to look round the centre of Tampines New Town.
Finally we were driven back to the city and we had another short stop at Arab Street, the muslim area.
