It poured with rain all night and was still raining very heavily when we woke and parts of the camp site were flooded.

We went to the Whaleway Station (this was originally the railway station) intending to go out whale watching but it was cancelled because of the weather conditions.

Consequently we changed our plans and drove down the coast towards Christchurch. Initially the road ran next to the sea with the railway line the other side of us. In two places there were three tunnels: one for the railway and two one-way tunnels for the road.
