Wednesday 21 October
As we couldn't go whale watching in NZ we decided to go today. We boarded the boat at 9.15 am at Circular Quays and then went to Darling Harbour to pick up some more passengers. There was not a large number of passengers which was good when we were whale watching.
We were told that we would have to go right out of the harbour into open water before we would see any whales. However whilst we were still in the outer harbour we saw 2 pods of humpback whales blowing. We got close to one of the pods which consisted of a mother, her calf and an escort. We watched them blow and dive. The calf could only stay under water for about 8 mins so we saw them quite often - adults can stay underwater for much longer. The pod was slowly travelling along the coast and getting closer in - to protect the calf from predators.
You will need to zoom in to see these pictures at their best.
