We arrived at Katoomba at 1 pm and took the railway to the bottom of the valley. This railway (which is counter balanced) is the steepest incline railway in the world (at 52 degrees) and part of the ride is through a long natural tunnel. It was originally built to haul coal from the mines at the bottom.
