We then went on to King Solomon's Cave. It was discovered in 1929 when rescuing a dog which had fallen through a shaft. It took three years to open it up and make it accessible to the public via a rope and wooden staircase. The entrance now is via a door in the side of the valley. It was not very far underground but was quite spectacular, from the entrance, with mainly stalactites hanging from, in places, very high roofs. There were also curtain stalactites, some of which when lit looked like rashers of bacon. In places there were tree roots hanging through the rock, some had calcified but others had not. Our guide was very knowledgeable and it was well worth the visit.
