At Taieri Mouth we crossed the Taieri River and travelled up to Waihola where we saw North Foreland Road, Goodwin Road and Ramsgate Street. We rejoined the SH1.

At Balclutha we crossed the Clutha River which is described as the 'largest in NZ' whatever that means. It was very wide and full of water rather than gravel as most have been. We then began travelling NW towards Te Anau.

We went through Clinton, Waipahi, Gore (where there was a Medway Street), Riversdale, Balfour, Lumsden and Mossburn which described itself as the deer capital. We had certainly seen a lot of deer farms in this area.

Before Mossburn the countryside was flat and the roads were very long and straight. Peter measured 7 miles with only 2 bends. After Mossburn we were relieved to have hills and bends. We saw a lot of eagles.

We turned off the main road to Manapouri and drove to a lookout point for the lake. We met a man there who told us he was a helicopter pilot and had just come back from 2 months at the equator shoal spotting for tuna fishermen. He said he was the first person to take sightseers onto the Fox Glacier. He had also shot deer as it destroyed the forests but then realised there was a demand for venison so sold them to the farmers. Venison is big business now. He had a boat on the lake which cost $52 pa to moor a 7m boat!
