Having rejoined the SH1 we turned off again at Karikane. Going over an inlet we saw some white birds so stopped to look at them. They were spoonbills. We met a man and his grandson at the waters edge who were hand trawling for whitebait. We waited for them to bring these creatures ashore. They are nothing like our whitebait but resemble tiny sand eels. They picked out the bigger breeding ones and also minute baby flounders and put them back in the water. The whitebait is cooked in batter.
