On the steep, twisty journey back up to the tunnel the mountains were bare rock with lots of narrow waterfalls running from the top to bottom.

After the tunnel we were in an avalanche warning area and couldn't stop. We could see some really blue ice high on a mountain.

In a 'safe stopping area' there was a kea bird which came right up to the van door - he was obviously used to being fed although they ask you not to.

Near Monkey Creek Bridge part of the road had fallen away and was being repaired. We had a good view of the upper Hollyford Valley.
