Waiouru - the largest army base. 814m above sea level and the highest station and furthest from the coast.

We finally came out of the snow which turned to rain at 4.45 pm near the Toi Toi Viaduct. We rapidly crossed several more spectacular viaducts across the Rangitikei River near Mongaweka.
We were finally back to pasture land and it stopped raining.

Marton - changed its name in 1869 in honour of James Cook.

Fielding - a town drawn up in England and based on Manchester (although is looked nothing like Manchester).

Palmerston North - named after Lord Palmerston and North was added to differentiate it from other Palmerstons.

We transferred to a coach as there was engineering works on the line!

We arrived in Wellington at 8.15 and had to wait in the extremely strong cold wind for our luggage.

It was difficult to take photos as it rained and snowed for most of the day and the windows were wet and dirty. The train ride was very bumpy.

We arrived in our hotel at 9 pm.
