Wednesday 14 October

We woke to rain.

We went to Franz Josef Glacier and climbed stiffly up to Sentinel Rock from where we could see the glacier in the distance. It looked much narrower than Fox Glacier, almost V shaped.

However as it was hissing down with rain we didn't take any pictures or walk out to the face.

After that we headed north through Whataroa, then a very hairy climb up a mountain, and through Hari Hari.

We stopped at Kakapotahi historic monument site. There was a sculpture of a trig point. The plaque beneath it said:

To the early surveyors in recognition of their contribution to the development of Westland.

Latitude 42 degrees 55 minutes 22 seconds South
Longitude 11 hours 23 minutes 02 seconds East
So we were 37 minutes from being half way round the world.
