When we went down the other side of the pass the landscape changed from densly wooded to much more barren.

We went beside and then over Hope River. We continued to follow a river. At some point the river became the Waiau River. Eventually this opened out to a very wide glacial valley.

We passed the turning for Hanmer Springs and went through Waiau village.

The road into Kaikoura was part of the Alpine Pacific Scenic Touring Route. There were a lot of hairpin bends.

We went over the Conway River bridge. The valley was very wide, with the fast flowing river looking very narrow.
